A letter written from prison by Dylann Roof, the Charleston church shooter shows he could care less about killing nine Black people in 2015. The now-famous prisoner has no remorse for his heinous crimes.
The Crimes of Dylann Roof
Roof shot and killed nine African Americans during a church service in Charleston two years ago. He has been sentenced to death for his crime. Roof wrote the letter to Christian Picciolini, a reformed white supremacist, who contacted him in prison.
The subject of Roof’s letter will be discussed by Scott Pelley on CBS News’ 60 Minutes on Sunday, December 17 at 7:30 p.m. ET and 7 p.m. PT.
White Supremacy & Violence
Picciolini was a teen when he was drafted into the white supremacist movement. He spent a total eight years within the movement, committing evil acts against blacks and Jews.
He revealed the movement brainwashed him by telling him he must prove his white superiority by committing acts of violence against other races.
Roof’s Prison Letter: No Remorse for Killing Black Church Worshippers
Picciolini said he became a neo-Nazi for many years until one day when he realized he had been indoctrinated with a wrong mindset. According to him, he hated people unjustly even when he never had a chance to interact with them.
“And when they took the step to try and reach me, the demonization of them that I had in my head started to crack.
Picciolini teaches the police, FBI and Homeland Security on how to understand and burst white supremacist movement today. He also works to counsel and reform indoctrinated white supremacists and has helped over 200 members.
It was part of this work that made him to reach out to Dylann Roof in prison but the latter responded with a scalding letter. Roof told Picciolini in his letter from prison:
“Well, starts off with; ‘Traitor, you’ve really cashed in, haven’t you? I know you won’t be, but you really should be ashamed of yourself. I hope you know that you are 100 times worse than the Jews you’ve surrounded yourself with.”

White Supremacists, Not Islamic Extremists, Have Been Responsible For Extremist-Related Killings
Picciolini told Pelley that Roof’s situation may be slightly helpless since his letter indicated no remorse for murders. He tells Pelley:
“That tells me he is completely indoctrinated by these alternate sets of facts… pushed by the movement that puts all the blame on– Jewish people…he’s been fed that [and] that’s become his reality.”
Oren Segal, director of the Center on Extremism at the Anti-Defamation League wrote:
“Data reveals that 74% of extremist-related killings in this country in the last ten years have been carried out by right-wing extremists, not Islamic extremists. So white supremacists, in particular, have been responsible for a majority of the killings, even in the last ten years.”
