Wings for LIFE International & Prison Fellowship, a prison outreach, put together a program that united families separated by bars this Christmas.
With the help of volunteers, the Southeastern Correctional Institution (SCI) saw early holidays.
94 inmates at SCI had a chance to spend a Family day with their prison loved ones. Hugging prison wives, sons, daughters, girlfriends and other relatives close.
They enjoyed a one-of-a-kind day for the 2017 holidays.
A Prison Holiday Like No Other
With a festive look full of decorations in the prison gym, families came together. With teddy bears sewn by hand on the tables, prisoners showed commitment and excitement for the meetup.
Holiday carols and festive music sung by inmates and the prison chapel band made the ambiance a holiday season-worth party. Many men inmates had the opportunity to dance along with their prison children, and enjoyed every second of it.
For many of the inmates, this was one of the few times they got to see their family and enjoy a day with them. With visitation schemes getting more complicated, these initiatives get a warm welcome from inmates.
The groups also have organized family holiday programs at about a dozen other state prisons in Ohio.
The Importance of Prison Families
Jim Forbes of Prison Felllowship told The Columbus Dispatch:
“It’s so important when men are incarcerated to keep their ties with their families.
Especially at this time of year, family is so important. For this short amount of time, it allows them to focus on their families and do arts and crafts, like every other family does at this time of year, and forget where they are.”

Among the other activities the inmates were able to do, they also decorated cookies with their kids. As a little extra, they also made Christmas cards with glitter, construction paper, and colored ornaments.
Many children looked fascinated and delighted to be able to spend a day with dad.
