Revamped Adult Prison Coming for New York’s 16 & 17-Year-Old Prisoners

Soon, 16 and 17-year-old prisoners in New York will have their own prison facility. By fall 2018, they will be housed at Adirondack Correctional Facility.

It’s located in a popular resort area in the mountain range of northeastern New York State. Located between Lake Placid and Saranac Lake, the Adirondacks Correctional Facility in Ray Brook may be the prison of choice for this purpose.

The Adirondacks Correctional Facility will be fully revamped in readiness for conversion to a teen’s prison. The prison facility is expected to open in the fall of 2018. The final structure of the proposed facility remains largely unknown, and state prison officials are not opening up on this yet.

Remote Location Chosen for NY’s 16 & 17-Year-Old Prisoners

Since Senator Betty Little of the City of Glen Falls made the announcement, a number of questions have been popping up. One of the main concerns is the preference for Ray Brook. Several persons have voiced their preference for Chateaugay or even Gabriels instead of Ray Brook.

The reason for this is largely because Ray Brook is in a remote location and far off for relatives of inmates to reach. This would lead to the 16 and 17-year-old prisoners receiving very few visits, which leads to recidivism.

Only New York and North Carolina have locked up 16 and 17-year old prisoners in actual prisons. No other US states has ever done this.

In fact, both states have locked up teenagers in prisons already occupied by adult and criminal offenders. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has made several efforts to increase the age of legal responsibility in the state to 18 instead of 16, but this has not worked out yet.

The whole idea buys into the school to prison pipeline phenomenon. Incarcerating teens at the Adirondacks Correctional Facility brings new meaning to the term “prison kids.”

State Budget Will Be Allocated For This Project, but It Won’t Affect Jobs

The Adirondacks Correctional Facility in Ray Brook is a medium security prison for adults. Re-purposing it to house teen offenders eats into state budget.

But, this won’t be as expensive as constructing new prison facilities for the 16 and 17-year-old prisoners. It will definitely be a massive mission shift in New York. But, correctional officers and security stakeholders do not believe the effort will affect jobs.

It is not clear at the moment if the choice of Ray Brook will spark reconsideration from the government. But, in the meantime, the New York state government is pushing ahead with its plans to revamp the adult prison into a facility for teenage inmates within the state.
