The Prison Life of Susan Smith, Woman Who Drowned Her 2 Sons

Susan Smith was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1994 for murdering her two sons. She strapped both boys into their seats at the back of her car and rolled it into a lake.

But this secret only came to light weeks after the deed had been done.

It was October 1994, and Smith had wept disconsolately that a black man took off with her kids. She claimed to have been carjacked, sending police in the wrong direction.

She wept for over a week urging the police to locate her children’s kidnapper. And the police set off on a trail of a black man that never actually existed.

Then Smith, who was 22 at the time, owned up and confessed to her crime. She was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. She is now serving out her life sentence at the Leath Correctional Institute in Greenwood, South Carolina. But prison life has not been easy for the woman and she has been disciplined for several infractions.

Susan Smith is now 46 years old and prison records reveal she has been in various troubles with the authorities. In fact, she has been punished more than five times within the past seven years for various troubles.

She had been caught using marijuana among other narcotics. She had been found mutilating herself. And she had been caught having sex with different jail officers.

Susan Smith wrote a letter in 2015 to a local newspaper claiming she is “not the monster society thinks I am”.

“Something went very wrong that night. I was not myself,” she wrote. “I was a good mother and I loved my boys. There was no motive as it was not even a planned event. I was not in my right mind.”

He said he still feels pains and gnawing heartache at what his wife did to their children. Perhaps this is something he will live with for the rest of his life.
