US Judge Orders Government to Help Mexican Drug Lord “El Chapo” In His Defense

Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman is currently held at a high-security Manhattan jail. The jail is usually used to keep mob and terrorist suspects.

el chapoGuzman’s defense counsels argue he should not be under such restrictive conditions that have been judged inhumane.

US District Judge Brian Cogan says Guzman has the rights to be part of his own defense. He has therefore ordered that the attorney-visiting room at the jail where Guzman is held undergo some modifications.

Cogan directed that another computer monitor be installed and a slot be created so that legal docs can be passed via a partition.

Guzman Had Escaped Twice From Mexican Prisons

Guzman is held on charges that his drug cartel executed large-scale killings and kidnappings. He is also charged with laundering massive caches of dollars for secret clients. The Mexican drug lord has denied the allegations and is currently remanded in jail.

Guzman, popularly known as El Chapo, had been incarcerated a number of times in Mexico. And he had managed to escape prison twice in his home country. His defense team says he should not be held at the Manhattan jail since it’s usually used to house terrorism suspects and high-profile gangsters.
