David Berkowitz is a 64 year old man from Yonkers. He is known by Son of Sam and the 44 Caliber Killer due to his serial killings record. Berkowitz has been in prison for the last 40 years for a string of NYC shootings and murders.
The Son of Sam has been locked up for so long many younger inmates do not know who he is today. But, surprisingly enough, the famous prisoner says he doesn’t want to be released from prison.
Why is the Son of Sam Behind Bars?
Berkowitz was arrested and imprisoned for being a serial killer. He has a unique record of killing 6 people and wounding 7 during a torturous shooting spree between 1976 and 1977 in New York City.
His attacks were random. Due to this randomness, there was fear within the whole area. Fear of the unknown because they did not know when he would strike next.
He even mocked the NYPD and the media by sending letters about his carnage.
Son of Sam: Reasons for the the Killings
David Berkowitz confessed at an interview with CBS News that his senseless attacks were to please the devil. He was a lonely man who lived alone in Yonkers, New York.
The 44 Caliber Killer explains that he was lost and confused and was fighting a battle within himself. He was seeking attention and trying to desperately to please the devil when he went on his serial-killing shooting spree.
How Attorneys Handled the Case of Son of Sam
Mark Heller was one of Berkowitz’s attorneys. He stepped down from the case before the famous prisoner pled guilty. Heller felt that David should be found “not guilty by reason of insanity.”
The serial killer’s attorney says Berkowitz only pled guilty as a result of poor legal representation. His other attorneys did not comment on Heller’s accusations.
Son of Sam’s Parole Request
David’s long-term attorney has tried hard to persuade him to file for a post-conviction motion. This can set him free. Berkowitz has sought parole ever since 2002, when he became eligible. But, he’s been denied every time.
Mark Heller says that if David is up for it, he could strike a deal with the DA and Court simultaneously, in order to vacate his guilty plea. The famous prisoner, however, does not want to be granted parole.
Why Son of Sam Does not Want to be Set Free
Berkowitz says that for the benefit of the families of his victims, he does not want to be set free. He is well aware of the hard times they went through because of him. The convicted serial killer knows that him staying behind bars is consolation for them.
Despite confessing to the murders, Berkowitz said he wants to distance himself from the demon responsible for them — and the nefarious nickname he gave himself in his letters to cops.
“As far as I’m concerned, that was not me,” Berkowitz said. “That was not me. Even the name, I hate that name, I despise the name.”
