Being released from prison is a mixture of many emotions, that tend to be overwhelming. The hardest thing is planning the next moves. Finding jobs is high on the list, which can be very hard to do.
Many inmates are released with the thought of starting a new life. But in reality, for many, it doesn’t work that way, especially if you have a felony record.
Jobs for Felons: Ex-Drug Dealer Kylie Parker
Many jobs do a background checks. For felons, the process for a job is over at that point. That’s the frustration that Kylie Parker, a reformed drug dealer, felt. He applied for jobs after being released from prison. Parker was rejected because of his felony record.
A company known to hire felons named Vericool finally gave him the break he needed. They gave him a job. Parker has now been there for a year and a half.
Former Gang Member Darrell Jobe Launches Vericool
Darrell Jobe had been through the same thing as Parker. So, he got fed up and opened his own company, Vericool, that is completely green.
Vericool makes packing boxes, shipping containers, and coolers that are good for the environment. Each container is 100% recyclable and compostable. The best part is that Jobe hires ex-felons who are released from jails and prisons, such as Kylie Parker.
Jobs for Felons: What Is Vericool?
Jobe launched Vericool in Livermore, California. He built this company using materials other than Styrofoam. He believes that in the future, this harmful material will be banned.
His company gives consumers an alternative that is healthy for the environment.
Jobe himself is a former East Bay gang member. Homeless, he dropped out of high school by 13, and began running with gangs in Richmond.
Within two hours of being jumped into the gang, he was in his first shootout. He himself was locked up three different times. Jobe is now an ex-felon entrepreneur.
The ex-con makes sure to hire ex-felons to give them the second chances he gave himself as a small business owner.
Jobs for Felons: ‘Privileged’ Corey Venson
Corey Venson, another Vericool employee, spent three years behind bars. In his past, he was one that wanted life handed to him. He didn’t want to work, go to school or anything. Now he says it feels good to earn it.
Vericool has plans to build plants on the East Coast and Midwest to continue to give more people second chances at life.
