Authorities are investigated circumstances under which an inmate died while incarcerated at Valdosta State Prison.
The deceased is suspected to have committed suicide but investigations are underway to confirm the cause of death. The Department of Corrections confirmed the incident that took place at the prison with 10 General Population units.
Prison medical staff had tried performing CPR on the inmate who was found unresponsive in his cell on Tuesday evening.
Milton Jones was discovered motionless in his cell a few minutes to 6:00 p.m. After the CPR failed, he was rushed to hospital and was pronounced dead a few minutes to 7.00 p.m.
Serving 21 years sentence in Valdosta State Prison
Milton Jones was serving a 21 year sentence after being found guilty of two offences. The first offence was possession of a firearm while the second one was aggravated assault.
In Georgia, charges related to possession of firearms result in varying prison sentence or fines depending on circumstances under which the convict possessed the firearm. On being convicted, Jones sentence was to be served at the prison which is located along Valtech Road in Lowndes county Georgia
The prison is categorized as a close security prison and it can host up to 1312 inmates.
State of affairs at Valdosta State Prison
Jones death is not the first one to occur at the Valdosta State prison. Over the past two years, five other inmates have died at the prison that also has Mental Health Units and Isolation beds. Inmates being housed at the general population in the prison can be visited on Weekends and during holidays from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
The prison incorporates work programs that allow inmates to work on various projects. They can also choose to take educational courses while serving their sentence at the prison. Other programs in the facility include counseling, recreation and religious activities.
