FSP & SAC Join the CDCR Gifts from the Heart Community Program for Prisoners

The program runs yearly and is set up by the Department of Health and Human Services for the needy to enjoy Christmas. Folsom State Prison (FSP) and California State Prison, Sacramento (SAC), are joining the program this season to give back to their communities.

Community partners and private sponsors in Sacramento make various donations to meet the wishes of kids and handicapped adults. And then volunteers as well as staff of the Department of Health and Human Services pick and distribute these products to individual recipients.

The Gifts from the Heart program event runs between November and December of every year.

. Sometimes social workers recommend what recipients would need and these are also taken care off from what partners have provided.

Folsom State Prison (FSP) and California State Prison (SAC), Sacramento, itemized some recipients and what they need. Prison staff fulfilled the orders as best they can.

Carl Siegler is the community resources manager for FSP who credits the willingness and generosity of the prison staff to make this year’s program a success.

Quality of Christmas Gifts for the Needy: From Bikes to Scooters, Dolls to Legos

Siegler said:

“Due to the dangerous work they do inside the prison, there is a real sense of community and family between everyone.”

FSP usually gives out gifts to between 65 and 70 children every year. But, this year they are giving out gifts to 100 children. Siegler noted:

“You can tell they are extremely excited to pay it forward and make Christmas special for a child who is away from their family and friends.

The quality of gifts has been amazing too – from bikes to scooters, dolls to Legos – the employees have really gone all out to buy some amazing and incredible gifts.”

Ashton Peterson, Siegler’s assistant, handles the organization and distribution of gifts per recipients’ requests. Click here for more information (pdf doc).
