How much would you pay to eat prison food at an actual restaurant? Well, a Singapore restaurant has been wondering just that. So, it’s owners decided to test it out. They’re turning Orange is the New Black, America’s “favorite show to binge watch” into a place where diners can sit down… and binge eat.
This OverEasy diner teamed up with Netflix, home of Orange is the New Black, to make it all possible. The online streaming network will come in on June 16th and 17th, and transform the Singapore restaurant into Litchfield Penitentiary Cafeteria. Meals will be served on plastic trays, giving it an authentic prison food look and feel.
OverEasy Restaurant Serves Nutraloaf Prison Food to Diners
There will be some cool plays on authentic meals, to make them more like prison meals. One notable prison dish that Bjorn Shen, executive chef at the Singapore diner, is quite proud of is Nutraloaf. This is a US prison food that’s been very controversial over the years. It usually consists of oatmeal or rice-based “stuff”, which is generally served to inmates who are being punished.
Of course this Nutraloaf would need to be much tastier (and better looking) for restaurant patrons to actually buy it. So, Shen’s play on Nutraloaf is actually a better version::
“I’ve made this dish look and feel like a Nutraloaf, but taste much better.
Mine’s made of mushrooms, cheddar, quinoa, pumpkin, and nori.”
Other dishes to be featured on the 3-course Orange is the New Black Prison Food Menu include:
- A corn appetizer – Includes lime, cheese and jalapeño
- Gruel – Almond crumble white chocolate-coconut pudding for dessert
Orange is the New Black is Back!
What does the Singapore restaurant encourage you to wash it all down with?
“…stay hydrated with a tall plastic cup of our refreshing house beverage: water.”
Why is Netflix entertaining Singapore diners with prison food? It’s promoting season 4 of Orange is the New Black. It hits Netflix this Friday, June 17th.
