Prison Care Packages: A Booming Business Breaking Prison Loved Ones’ Banks

Do you have a loved one in prison that you’d love to send gifts to? That’s what prison care packages are all about. Most inmates can get them quarterly.

During a holiday season, birthday or other special moment, you cannot afford to neglect those you love regardless of the situations they are in. To avoid drugs and weapons from entering prison gates, you can’t physically take them gifts inside.

But there are several other means on how your loved ones in prison can receive your gifts indirectly. There are several industries that provide services such as sending gift packages to prisons.

These prison care packages are commonly referred to as quarterly packages by prisoners and loved ones.

That’s because inmates are only allowed to receive one package per quarter. And each package can only weigh so much.

How Do Prisoner Care Packages Work?

A prisoner care package offers a variety of goods for prison loved ones to send their incarcerated family and friends. Some items allowed in quarterly packages include:

  • Shoes
  • Food Items
  • Clothing
  • Burned CDs
  • Beauty Aids
  • Toiletries
  • Much, much more

How does the prison care packages industry work? It’s really simple. This is how it typically works for an inmate with a prison wife, daughter, father, brother or other loved one on the outside who buys the packages for them:

  1. Inmate goes through the catalog, completes an order form and mails it home
  2. Loved one goes online and uses the printed order form to complete the order online
  3. Prisoner receives the prison care package via the facility

Stipulations for Quarterly Packages

Religious items, such as Bibles, Rosary beads and Allah pendants can also be sent to your imprisoned loved ones through a special prison package that doesn’t count towards their quarterly ones.

Items are often limited by the dollar charge at some facilities: $50 a week or $150 every three months. Others limit the amount allowed each quarter by weight.

Expect higher rates from prison-approved catalogs than how you would purchase from a store. Industries that offer prisoner care packages services often collect additional charges such as commissary and phone taxes.

Charges will depend on the negotiation between the correction department and the private vendors.

Prison Care Packages… A Multi-MILLION Dollar Business

All this is fixed in one contract with a correction agency. According to the 2014 contact proposal, posted on the West Virginia state government website, Keefe Commissary Network with Access Securepak, reported sales of more than $375 million.
