said it was more fun to shoot people dead than see another Monday. She hated Mondays enough to kill people. And, in 1979 she mowed down people with 30 rounds of ammunition.
Spencer was convicted and is currently incarcerated at the California Institution for Women in Corona, CA (CIW). The music group Boomtown Rats was inspired by Spencer’s deed enough to produce a song that reminded everyone of her evil.
That was in 1981.
The Hard Knock Life of Brenda Ann Spencer
Brenda Ann Spencer suffered depression as a teenager. She was a 16-year-old who did not find high school fun.
The teen continued to plod through school, but her classmates found her weird. She descended into depression when her classmates ostracized her. Even social workers thought she may have been suicidal.
Spencer was a naturally quiet individual. But, she resolved to “do something big to get on TV”.
No one thought she could do anything “big” enough to get the fame she craved for relevance. One day, the opportunity Spencer needed to prove herself came in an unexpected way.
Instead Of Radio for Christmas, Spencer’s Father Gave Her a Gun
Just before Christmas of 1979, Spencer told her father she would like a radio as present for Christmas. But, because her parents apparently cared little about her, her father got her a gun instead.
It was a Ruger 10/20 semi-automatic .22 caliber rifle. The heat came with a telescopic sight, and 500 rounds of ammunition.
Spencer thought to kill herself with the gun since she was literally an outcast. But, she thought better of it. Her bedroom window overlooked the Grover Cleveland Elementary School in San Diego.
On January 29, 1979, she installed her rifle in her bedroom window and fired up to 30 rounds of bullets directly at the elementary school. By the time she fired 30 rounds, two persons were dead and nine wounded.
Brenda Ann Spencer Shoots Up Grover Cleveland Elementary School
Spencer was arrested and convicted of two murders. She still remains at CIW in Corona, CA as a CDCR inmate.
When asked at the time why she shot people, she shrugged and responded:
“I don’t like Mondays. It was a lot of fun seeing children shot.”
The Boomtown Rats song was titled I Don’t Like Mondays. It was released in 1981, two years after Spencer committed the heinous school shootings and murders.
