This year is almost gone, and will soon become history. But, not the media that shaped it. 2017 brought us some sizzling hot true crime TV shows, movies and books that we may never forget. Here’s our year-end top 10 list, all of which you should look out for in 2018:
1. Killers of the Flower Moon
It is about the execution of the Osage Indian tribe when oil was found on their land in the 1920s in Oklahoma. Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro are consulting to make a movie adaptation of the book soon.
Produced by Netflix, Mindhunter is about mindless serial killers. The movie features horror scenes that chill to the bones and you’ve got to have heart to watch it. It premiered in October with a second season following soon.

3. Strong Island
Also produced by Netflix, Strong Island details the tragic death of William Ford Jr., who was killed in 1992 on Long Island. The movie bears an element of murder-suicide, but set upon the tripod of social class, ethnic race, and terrible criminal justice. It won a Special Jury Award at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.
4. The Road to Jonestown: Jim Jones and the Peoples TempleThe Road to Jonestown: Jim Jones and Peoples Temple Written by Jeff Guinn and published by Simon & Schuster, The Road to Jonestown: Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple is an investigative work.
It unearths secrets about Jim Jones whose close to 1,000 followers consumed Flavor Aid laced with cyanide in 1978 – just to escape an impending apocalypse.
5. The Keepers
The Keepers is produced by Netflix. It is a seven-episode film about a favorite Catholic nun and teacher who was killed and then dumped inside a landfill in 1970. It is believed her death is connected to the randy Catholic Father who was the school chaplain. The release of the film has led to inquiries about what actually happened back then in Baltimore.
6. Mommy Dead and Dearest
Produced by HBO, Mommy Dead and Dearest delves into the mystery of a 2015 murder. It tells the actual story of a mother who was killed by her own daughter after spreading the news that her daughter is chronically ill. The daughter, Gypsy Rose Blanchard, is now in prison.
7. Heaven’s Gate
If you have always wanted to know more about the sordid suicides of 39 cultists who called themselves Heaven’s Gate in 1997, then this podcast is a must-watch. The group exterminated themselves on the notion that they would be picked up by an UFO. The podcast is available on Stitcher.
8. Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders
Talks about the Menendez Murders are not going away so soon. NBC produced Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders to analyze what made two brothers kill their parents in 1996.
During season one, the real-life trials of Erik and Lyle were examined. Edie Falco, the wife from The Sopranos, plays Attorney Leslie Abramson, the “boys'” lawyer.
9. My Favorite Murder
They reveal murder incidents and spice it up with fun and humor in a way that gets viewers riveted to their seats for hours. The My Favorite Murder podcast runs weekly.
10. Member of the Family
She never participated in any of the murders. But, she did serve as a key witness during the Manson trial. This is her memoir of her time as one of Charlie’s Girls.
