Oprah Winfrey was recently at Pelican Bay State Prison in California. She also visited the renowned Security Housing Unit (SHU) of the facility where tortures are alleged to be carried out.
Winfrey will be broadcasting her report on the SHU on 60 Minutes Sunday on October 22 by 7:30 p.m. ET and 7 p.m. PT.
Oprah Winfrey, Mike Wallace and Lesley Stahl among Others Had Reported On the SHU
Due to several allegations of torture at the SHU, the unit is referred to as Skeleton Bay. In spite of the infamous history of California prisons, the state is geared towards bringing reforms to its prisons.
One of major prison reforms is to restrict family visits to inmates and replace this with computer video screens. Advocates of prison visits say restricting family visits to inmates may cause them to develop mental instability.
Mike Wallace visited the SHU in 1993 and reported his findings on CBS’s 60 Minutes. Wallace reported on the unit when the California Department of Corrections praised Pelican Bay as the best prison facility in the country. Lesley Stahl was also there in 2005 and x-rayed his observations on 60 Minutes. Stahl analyzed how ferocious gangsters ran murderous enterprises on the outside from within their cells.
